Covid-19 (Coronavirus) - Status Update Thread
by Simon inthis topic is to focus on status updates & advice (no opinion or politics please).. status.
latest status is that it's serious, probably isn't going to be contained and most large companies are making contingency plans, cancelling large events etc... which i don't think would happen if it was just people being alarmist.
the incubation period means it may have already spread further and infected many more people than are currently known, so expect jumps in the numbers over the coming days and weeks.. tracking.

Maybe this has already been said, but why not shut down all international borders, except for goods and trade, for 2 weeks?
It would help contain the virus and at least there is an end date, at which point it can be reassessed . A big part of the problem at the moment is wondering how long the uncertainty will prevail.

JW's had a reason for wanting to be banned in Russia?

i'd like everybody's thoughts on this.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mrlfvxinte8&fbclid=iwar2omsj1dkm7rzxcyjblkd9aqnnp5xmijrxoc-rfaoh7ucfgvwlpkiynofs.

I haven't watched it yet, but Terry, I found your explanation of it interesting.
I haven't really thought about the letter writing before, and what the real reasons for spamming letters are.
I always thought about it as a feel good exercise for the average jw and especially the children, as a way a family could write their beliefs down, send it overseas and find yet another way to indoctrinate their kids.
But it sounds like the idea of a mis-information / misdirection campaign makes sense too. Nothing the GB does would surprise me.

Judaeo Christian religious practices may have actually come from ancient Egyptian religoius beliefs and practices
by Finkelstein inunder close investigation of ancient middle eastern civilizations and their religoius beliefs and practices, there appears to be a connecting commonality derived from astronomical mythological beliefs.
.
as shown through the documentary zeitgeist it would appear that these ancient civilizations plagiarized mythological beliefs from an original source to use for their own individual means and purpose, the ancient egyptian mythological practices being the originating source.. the documentary zeitgeist brings forth some interesting thoughts.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a9ywr5tcjae.

I've read a bit about this and I was under the impression that, even though there are similarities, there are no definite links to Egypt.
IS RA EL is a new one to me and on the surface looks convincing, combining Ra and El.
Another one I read was does the word amen relate to amun?
Then, there are the trinity gods, mother, son, father. The evil God, Set, etc.
Maybe the religions are more related through celebrating the seasons and recurring astronomical events.

Loveuni,
Totally agree. Once again, it's the compelled speech that I personally dislike the most. We are being forced down a road of thought.

Half-banana,
My post may have seemed a little cynical, and it is, but I also wanted to add that I try to respect all people regardless of race, gender identity, or whatever.
I also understand that gender is a spectrum and some people may genuinely feel like they are born into the wrong body, which would create a lot of anxiety for them. If someone feels they are a man , woman or neither, I am willing to accept their decision.
The line I baulk at crossing is accepting the made up pronouns. I don't really have a problem with his, hers or they because it can describe everyone.
Made up pronouns smack of narcissism to me. Someone is trying to tell me that their human experience transcends the normal life most of us have, and therefore, they cant possibly be classified with the rest of us and must be referred to by using exalted pronouns. I can imagine extremely creative types reinventing themselves once in a while and changing their pronouns to suit.
Loveuni mentioned that this has forced compelled speech. People are forced to accept that someone is a man, for example, when everything their brain and life experience is telling them is the opposite. You are being forced to reject your own perception of the world.
On the subject of prison, this is causing real problems because a male sex offender simply has to say, 'I identify as a woman, and I feel I should be put into a female prison', and they have to be taken seriously.
The whole pronoun debate has only really kicked off over the last few years, so a lot of people may not have had to deal with it, but it definitely has the potential to cause some real problems. As someone wise once said, 'this is what happens when you don't have to chop your own firewood'.

Ive had some experience with this issue at my workplace.
Has anyone heard of pronoun badges? It displays your name and then your preferred pronoun, such as his/hers or they, if you aren't sure.
But it doesn't stop there.
Whatever you decide to be known as is now how people must describe you when they are talking about you in the third person, to deliberately not do so is discriminatory.
For example, 'Bob works really hard, they deserve a raise.' Yes, 'they' is how you describe a single person, not a group. Bob has decided he doesn't want to be known as a male, even though that is his birth gender and he hasn't gone through gender reassignment. It is all about how Bob feels. He is free to change his mind , of course, and it is up to all of us to keep up with Bobs preferred pronoun.
But wait, theres more. You can also decide to choose a made up pronoun, some examples are xie, zir and zem. If you don't like that, you can choose a cosmic pronoun to describe yourself. New York city now recognises about 30 different pronouns.
On the subject of puberty blockers, why is it ok for kids to make this decision? It reminds me so much of the blood issue, which is the argument about children not having the mental capacity to decide for themselves if a medical procedure is ok for them. When I was a kid, I dressed up as superman and identified as superman.
Its 2020 folks, get with the program. By the way, my pronouns this week are Lord, or His Worship.

Circuit Overseer to Answer My Questions + Concerns...or Not
by Research inhello all, i'm 'researching', a jw who is in the first steps of taking a look at their beliefs.. i've semi-recently (about a couple weeks ago) heard about the sexual abuse cases (pennsylvania attorney general’s investigation request) and then the arc in 2015. this lead to a deep investigation, which lead to many questions arising.
a jw friend of mine suggested i be careful (due to apostates) and ask the brothers.
so i typed up my questions + concerns and emailed an elder my mother has known for a long time.

Hi Research,
I'm probably just just echoing statements made here already but just be prepared to receive cold, conditioned resonses to all your queries.
Most of your current jw friends will not talk about your concerns in any meaningful, thoughtful way and you will be left feeling unsatisfied.
You are going to hear a lot of wait on jehovah and do you believe that the gb are gods representatives on earth. Also, the old classic, where else will you go?
All the best.

Heres the problem - or one of many that's wrong with these type of articles.
Good JW parents will read this and be convinced that it would be wrong to let their kids learn self-defence.
The first myth is that everyone that learns karate or other forms of martial arts are killing machines. They are not. Most people learn these skills for self-defence, discipline and fitness, a tiny percentage of people that learn how to fight actually compete in the ring. Most people will never have a fight of any kind, either on the street, or a competitive fight.
The next myth is that learning how to fight makes people violent. Good instructors teach discipline and self-control, respect for the gym and fellow students. Students are taught never to fight except for defence and I know trainers that do not welcome students to their gym if they are thugs.
Every jw article I have read depicts the karate guy as some kind of dangerous, deadly assassin, always ready to fight. Its actually quite funny.
If you are a parent reading this, let your kid learn these skills, self defence is a life skill. Go with them to the gym, encourage their progress and meet their new friends.
